Multiply each year by each generation of club-goers and that's a lot of lives influenced. But how can the value of these relationships to the lives of young people and their wider communities be measured? Youth workers know that they make a difference. But it is more difficult to convince policymakers and fund-holders of the importance of what youth work achieves.
This was one reason why the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) awarded a 500,000 contract to the youth affairs unit at De Montfort University in February 2003 to produce a report analysing the impact of youth work on young people. It was hoped the findings would persuade the Treasury to allocate more money to youth services.
