So a new report on gang violence has been released?
Iain Duncan Smith's social exclusion policy group, the Centre for Social Justice, has published a thorough review of the problem, along with a list of policy recommendations.
Is gang violence a growing problem?
It certainly seems to be but there's conflicting evidence from academics, civil servants and the police about just how big the problem is. For instance, academic John Pitts' research into gang culture and activity in the London boroughs of Waltham Forest and Lambeth found 50 per cent more gangs than the Metropolitan Police had identified. The Met has said there are 171 gangs operating in London, while the Home Office has estimated a total of 356 gang members. Although it's easy to say that two people don't make a gang, it's a very complex issue to try to pin down.
