Drug experts act to curb legal highs

1 min read Health
Experts are to give children and young people advice on legal highs via internet sites including Facebook and mobile phone applications, after it emerged close to 400 new drugs have been identified online.

The Recreational Drugs European Network (Rednet) is looking to create a number of technology-based prevention tools including text messages, smartphone applications, websites and virtual games.

Funded by the European Union, Rednet will act as a fast-response to the emergence of new psychoactive compounds such as mephedrone, which can remain unregulated for long periods of time.

The two-year programme, which launched last month and runs until the end of 2011, will target young people aged 16 to 24 as well as professionals working with them in health, education and social services.

The launch of Rednet comes after another European Union project - the Psychonaut Web Mapping Project - found 388 new drugs being either discussed or sold on internet sites.
