Don't miss: YHA at 75

The Youth Hostels Association (YHA) celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Presenter Ian McMillan follows its journey from austere prewar shelters to sophisticated campaign group, meeting the young people who are experiencing life outside the city for the first time, and those who were there at the start.

The YHA was set up as a do-it-yourself organisation for the young. McMillan visits hostels and witnesses the challenges the YHA faced after its decline in popularity and the effects of foot-and-mouth disease. Current YHA president John Craven describes the radical changes the organisation has had to make to survive.
