Don't miss ... Word 4 Word - BBC Radio 4, 3 August, 9.00-9.30am

The first programme, New Kids On The Block, looks at the phenomenon of the chav, otherwise known as trevs, neds, spides, scallies, pikeys and townies. The question was posed: what do you call a young person in cheap, trendy clothes and jewellery?

They represent a disengaged group who "hang around outside McDonald's", according to young people in Barrow-in-Furness. Young fans of Leicester City Football Club say they "stand around on street corners smoking fags with skirts up to their arses".

What part they play in the antisocial behaviour debate will no doubt emerge as linguistics and dialectology move inevitably into anthropology and sociology.
