PJ White's recent article about disability ('Disability inclusion zones', YPN 22 January) was one of the most important professional discussions we have had in the youth service for a long time.
It coincided with the Community and Youth Workers' Union's speech to a motion at the TUC Disabled Workers' Conference last December, on the under-employment of disabled people in local authorities. It pointed out that even the best local authorities only employ two disabled workers out of every 100 employees, even though they form 14 per cent of the population.
Yes, the Disability Discrimination Act offers great opportunities for young people. Yes, the application of the new provisions to the youth service could transform tens of thousands of lives. But who will monitor the transformation we need?
