Disability: A lifeline for Tom and Mary

Parents of disabled children have to navigate a complex maze of health and care services, often under trying circumstances. Samantha Thorp finds out how important it is to have a good support service to turn to.

Bringing up a child as a single parent is hard enough, but if the childhas a disability that journey becomes all the more challenging. Thedifficulties that single parents often experience - isolation, stressand financial hardship - are multiplied.

Mary Elizabeth Smith is the first to admit it's not been an easyride.

Tom (pictured above with his mother) is 13 and has AspergerSyndrome.

When he was diagnosed at the age of seven, his father - unable to cope -walked out. Mary acknowledges that Tom's diagnosis was a mixedblessing.

"When Tom was first diagnosed, I was all over the place. I was glad toget a diagnosis, but I thought now what do I do?"
