The cost of just five Department for Education (DfE) policy reviews could run to more than 600,000, according to figures released in parliament.

Responding to a question from Tom Watson, children's minister Tim Loughton revealed the Early Years Foundation Stage review, led by Action for Children chief executive Dame Clare Tickell, is set to cost up to £350,000 - £250,000 of which could be spent on research alone.

Professor Eileen Munro's review into improving frontline practice in child protection is estimated to cost in the region of £100,000, as is the review into capital spending led by Sebastian James, group operations director at electronics retailer DSG International.

The review of the Office of the Children's Commissioner - being carried out by former Association of School and College Leaders general secretary John Dunford - is set to cost £50,000 and the Children in Need census review is expected to come in at £7,000. This review is being led by Nigel Nicholds, research manager at Norfolk Council.
