Developing the culture of compassionate care

What is it all about? As the role of nurses, midwives and caregivers evolves in terms of the way treatment and care is delivered in the new NHS, the government wants to create a revised set of standards for the professions. On the back of discussions with health staff around the UK, the chief nursing officer for England and director of nursing at the Department of Health have drawn up a draft strategy to support professionals in delivering the best care possible. Six core values – care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment – have been identified, alongside six areas of action to support professionals to deliver the standards.
