Debate: Does the Children Bill lack a focus on health issues?

1 min read
Although the Bill talks about physical and mental health in the context of improving the well-being of children, experts are concerned that its focus on child protection means it lacks a broader approach to health issues.

YES - Dr Laurence Knott, GP and named doctor for child protection in Enfield

The Bill needs to address more what happens in primary medical care, particularly in terms of co-ordinating information and obtaining information in the primary healthcare setting. I would like to have seen some recognition of the importance of it, the resourcing of it and how it would operate on the ground. I think the Bill is very much directed towards things that are happening at upper management levels, but not so much at the people who deliver the care.

YES - Professor Alan Craft, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health
