DCSs need specialist training, says college

Training for potential leaders of children's services must not overlook specialist knowledge at the expense of expanding council remits, according to the National College for School Leadership.

Earlier this month, CYP Now reported that nearly a quarter of directors of children's services in England are also responsible for adult services, while some directors are taking on widening portfolios, which include "communities" and "wellbeing".

The National College currently delivers training and support for serving and aspiring directors of children's services (DCS), but its grant is due to end in April next year.

Catherine Fitt, the college's strategic director for children's services, said councils and managers must be supported to meet Professor Eileen Munro's recommendation to protect the specific role of the DCS, while acknowledging how the role is changing in certain areas.
