Data Check: Accommodation for children in care

The government has produced a data pack on children's homes with the aim of helping local authorities and providers offer effective and stable placements for children in care.

Among the statistics is a breakdown of the number of children held in residential settings across England. These reveal that 6,200 children were living in children's homes, hostels and secure units in 2010 compared with 7,000 children accommodated in residential childcare in 2005.

In 2010, 2,500 children were placed in homes, hostels and secure units outside of their local authority (LA). A further 1,000 were housed in homes and hostels not subject to regulations; of these, 380 children were unaccompanied asylum seekers.

According to the information, there is also a large disparity between how much local authorities use children's homes, with three councils placing no children in residential settings and one placing 225.
