Youth prisons could be attached to schools, says Justice Secretary; Coventry's director of children's services steps down, and looked-after children's mental health services in Dudley face axe, all in the news today.

Detention centres could be built next door to pupil referral units under proposals to overhaul the youth justice system, the Justice Secretary has suggested. The Telegraph reports that Chris Grayling said teachers should play a greater role in youth justice to boost education levels and reduce the reoffending rate. Grayling said his suggestion was inspired by the free schools programme, and that some teachers should go a step further to establish and run their own secure colleges.

Coventry City Council’s director of children’s services has announced his retirement, following calls for his resignation over poor school results. The Coventry Telegraph reports that Colin Green faced criticism after the city’s primary schools were placed bottom of an Ofsted national league table. A statement issued by the council confirmed he would leave at the end of August. “Colin has led the directorate through some very challenging times and has done so with integrity, professionalism and dedication,” it said.
