Daily roundup: Youth Contract, jobs threat at Hull children's services and support for LGBT young people

Fierce criticism of government efforts on youth unemployment, cuts in Hull could see 90 jobs go, and children as young as 10 seeking support from LGBT youth groups, all in the news today.

The government’s £1bn Youth Contract initiative has been labelled “a farce” by an organisation delivering the programme. Patricia Seabright, founder of Eureka Youth, said the focus on 16- to 18-year-olds without a single GCSE is “ridiculously narrow”. She added that it is difficult to identify those who qualify because “government cuts have ripped out the infrastructure and people such as youth workers and Connexions who were best place to track and work with challenged young people”.

A total of 90 jobs are under threat in Hull council’s children’s services department, according to the Hull Daily Mail. A report by the authority’s head of finance has predicted a £3.1m overspend for the department this year. The authority has already made cuts to the directorate, including £7.6m last year, which led to 300 children's services staff taking voluntary redundancy. Earlier this week the council decided to axe discretionary school grants for children from low-income families in a move expected to save in the region of £200,000 a year.
