Daily roundup: Votes at 16, alcohol pricing and looked-after children

Inquiry launched on votes at 16; call for minimum alcohol pricing to reduce child suicides; and number of children in care in Nottinghamshire doubles, all in the news today.

An inquiry into the prospect of lowering the voting age to 16 has been launched by the Youth Select Committee. It has made a call for evidence ahead of exploring the issue and hearing opinions. The call for evidence closes on 2 May and the committee will hold oral evidence sessions in the House of Commons in June and July.

The Child Death Review Programme has concluded that setting a minimum price for alcohol could reduce child suicides in Wales. According to the BBC, the inquiry found drug and alcohol use to be a common factor in 34 suicide deaths in young people between 2006 and 2012.

The Number of children in care in Nottinghamshire has doubled in the space of six years. ITV News reports that fresh calls for people in the county to consider fostering or adopting older children have been made as a result of the rise. There are now 847 children in care in the county – double the number in 2008.
