Daily roundup: Volunteering, child abuse, and young runaways

School pupils could gain more from volunteering than classroom learning; study shows child sex abuse helpline inundated with calls; and survey reveals quarter of children think about running away, all in the news today.

A new report recommends that traditional desk-based schooling should be replaced with volunteering-style tasks. Think-tank Demos has said the move would help pupils develop their character and better prepare them for later life.

Research reveals that the Stop It Now child sex abuse helpline is overwhelmed by callers. The Times reports findings of the NatCen study, which found that four times as many calls go unanswered as get through to an operator.

More than one in four children in the UK have considered running away from home, according to a study. The Action for Children survey also found that more than half of children ran away because of disputes with family members.
