Youth unemployment has risen, a MyPlace youth centre needs costly repairs three years after it opened, and pupils could help decide teachers' pay, all in the news today.

Youth unemployment has risen by 20,000 since November last year. Data published by the Office for National Statistics today showed 979,000 16- to 24-year-olds were unemployed between November 2012 and February 2013.

A youth centre opened under the government’s MyPlace scheme needs £40,000 worth of repairs just three years after it opened, the Echo reports. Shoebury Youth Centre in Southend cost £2.9m and opened in 2010. But a survey revealed it needed 76 different repairs and found rooms were too small for groups to rent. Councillors on Southend Council’s children and lifelong learning scrutiny committee criticised the amount of maintenance the building needed. The council blamed “high usage” for the damage.
