
A programme that supports young mothers from disadvantaged backgrounds is to be extended, the Department of Health (DH) has announced. The Family Nurse Partnership currently supports 11,000 mothers aged up to 20. But the DH plans for 5,000 more mothers by 2015 to receive regular visits as home from a nurse until their baby is two-years-old. Health minister Dan Poulter said: “Family Nurse Partnerships play a major role in supporting children in some of the most disadvantaged circumstances to have the very best start in life.” The DH said the programme was proven to make parents more likely to return to education or employment.
