Daily roundup: Shannon Matthews court order, Olympic auction and Ofsted in South Yorkshire

Details of an injunction on the Shannon Matthews serious case review, Olympic mascots to go under the hammer for children, and child protection in Barnsley and Rotherham, all make the news today.

An injunction has been granted stopping the government publishing a full serious case review into the abduction of schoolgirl Shannon Matthews, according to the Dewsbury Reporter. It has emerged that Shannon’s father obtained an injunction in April to stop the government releasing the entire review. The injunction has since been set aside on the understanding that the full report will not be published until another hearing has been held in October. A summary of the serious case review was published in June 2010.

Life size statues of Olympic mascot Wenlock are to be auctioned off to raise money for London’s most disadvantaged children. Proceeds from the sales will go to the Mayor’s Fund for London, which was established to help improve the lives of the capital's neediest children. Seven Olympic mascots painted by artists – including “Groovy Wenlock”, currently on display in Regent Street, are the first in a series of Olympic-themed items to be auctioned for the charity.

Child protection services in South Yorkshire have been told to improve following Ofsted inspections. In Barnsley six of the 22 areas looked at by the watchdog were deemed to be inadequate. The council has said it is taking “appropriate steps” to address any shortfalls. In Rotherham, all areas were graded adequate, but Ofsted asked for 13 improvements to be made. The council said a series of improvements are underway.

The Government’s closure of a legal loophole will help protect children abroad and at home from sexual abuse, the charity ECPAT UK has said. The organisation warned that the so-called ‘three-day loophole’ in the Sexual Offences Act, allowed registered British sex offenders to travel abroad for up to three days without having to notify the authorities. The loophole has now been closed.
