Daily roundup: School places, mephedrone, and UKYP's House of Commons debate

London Councils claim central government funding delays could deprive pupils of school places, drug services warn of rise in mephedrone use, and the UK Youth Parliament holds its annual House of Commons debate, all in the news today.

The government’s decision to delay funding announcements for building new classrooms means that pupils could miss out on school places, London Councils has warned. The Department for Education has put back the planned announcement on schools funding from December to late January 2013. In a letter to Education Secretary Michael Gove, London Councils’ chair Jules Pipe said London’s soaring demand for places means that “many boroughs have already started the statutory process to expand schools permanently, on the expectation that they would receive confirmation of this year’s basic need allocation this December.”

Drug services are reporting increasing numbers of young people suffering problems associated with mephedrone. The DrugScope survey of drug services, police forces, drug action teams and service-user groups from 20 UK towns also found increasing numbers of young people have been hospitalised for following panic attacks, paranoia and general loss of control caused by the drug.  “Although mephedrone was banned in 2010, it has remained a popular ‘party drug’,” said Yasmin Batliwala, chair of Westminster Drug Project.
