
The number of permanent school exclusions schools dropped by 11.5 per cent last year, according to official figures. There were 5,080 permanent exclusions from primary, secondary and special schools in 2010/11, compared to 5,740 in 2009/10. The number of fixed period exclusions across all schools also dropped by 2.2 per cent from 279,260 to 271,980, but the figure rose in primary schools from 37,210 to 37,790.
Controversial plans to end children's heart surgery at Leeds General Infirmary, have been referred to an independent panel following a major protest, The Guardian reports. A hearing by a regional health watchdog made up of representatives from local councils agreed to refer the matter in light of complaints from concerned parents and NHS staff.
