Daily roundup: Road safety, fathers in hospitals, and guns

More than 85,000 children hit by cars, fathers marginalised in hospitals, and gun licenses given to 11-year-olds, all in the news today.

More than 85,000 children were hit by cars on roads within 500 metres of a school between 2006 and 2011, reports Sky News. The figures, compiled by Axa Car Insurance, show that London had the highest number of incidents.

Fathers play active roles when a child is hospitalised but are often seen as marginal by professionals, according to a study in Nursing Times. The study recommended that children’s nurses involve fathers more as partners in care.

Children as young as 11 have been granted licences allowing them to legally fire guns, the Watford Observer reports. A Freedom of Information request revealed that 74 under 18s in Hertfordshire have certificates enabling them to use firearms, including shotguns.
