
A Labour MP whose constituency was badly damaged during the riots of August 2011, has accused the government of failing to act on recommendations to prevent them from happening again. The Guardian reports that research conducted by Tottenham MP David Lammy revealed only 11 of 63 proposals made by a cross-party inquiry have been implemented since the report’s publication in March 2012.
An average family will lose nearly £900 over the next year because of benefit changes introduced yesterday, a think-tank has claimed. Sky News reports that the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that the cost to an average family will be £891 over the next 12 months. From 1 April, housing benefit will be cut for council house tenants with more bedrooms than they need. From next Saturday, the annual increase in tax credits and other working-age benefits will be reduced to one per cent.
More than a dozen children are excluded for sexual misconduct every day, figures show. The Telegraph reports that Department for Education (DfE) figures show that more than 3,000 children were excluded from school for sexual misconduct in both 2009/10 and 2010/11 - an average of 15 a day. A DfE spokesman said exclusions for sexual misconduct are “extremely rare and decreasing”, representing less than 0.05 per cent of pupils.
