Assaults by pupils on primary school teachers on the rise; new risk assessment guidance for children's homes published; and quarter of early years settings not inspected in last four years, all in the news today.

Nearly 50 primary school pupils a day are suspended for assaulting teachers, figures reveal. The Daily Mail reports that Department for Education data shows that children aged five to 11 were suspended 9,080 times for assault against an adult in 2012/13, up five per cent from 8,630 in 2011/12.

The Department for Education has published guidance for providers of children's homes detailing how they should conduct risk assessments of their premises. Under new regulations that came into effect in April this year, managers of all existing children’s homes should carry out an initial annual assessment by 31 December 2014
