Daily roundup: Paternity leave, child sexual exploitation, and youth zone talks

Study finds 20 per cent of dads want more time off work to look after their children, Peterborough grooming gang sentenced to a total of 54 years in jail, and youth charity planning £6m centre for Chester, all in the news today.

More than one in five men wish they had looked after their children rather than returning to work, researchers say. The BBC reports that a survey, commissioned to help launch the Work and Family Show, also found that one in three men questioned worked full-time and were offered no flexibility at all by their employers.

A gang that raped and sexually assaulted five vulnerable girls in Peterborough has been jailed. The Guardian reports that four members of the gang were sentenced to a total of 54 years for rapes and sexual assaults on the girls, one of whom had learning difficulties. Peterborough City Council has begun a serious case review into the circumstances.

A £6m youth centre is in the pipeline for Chester city centre. The Chester Chronicle reports that youth charity OnSide is in talks with Cheshire West and Chester Council about the potential youth zone development.

Twenty so-called “nurture units” have been launched in primary schools in Northern Ireland in a bid to help 500 children deemed to be at risk of falling behind in education. The BBC reports that as part of joint project between the Department for Social Development and Department of Education, pupils will be given extra attention in a bid to improve their social skills and school performance.

Jobs in the youth justice service will be among those to go at Trafford Council after politicians at the authority approved a £17m package of cuts. The Manchester Evening News reports that in addition to a total of 84 jobs going as a result of the cuts, all staff will be expected to take three days’ unpaid leave and will see their sick pay cut.
