
A mother in Bolton has been asked to pay a fine of more than £400 after her son missed school to receive cancer treatment nine years ago. Darilyn Rothwell told the Bolton News her son had a brain tumor in 2004 and missed school to receive life-saving treatment. Bolton Council took Rothwell to court on grounds of truancy in 2004, but she believed the authority had dropped the charge.
The NSPCC and Beatbullying have issued advice to children on how to stay safe online following the suicide of a 14-year-old girl who was a victim of cyberbullying. The Telegraph reports that the charities have also urged young people to speak out against cyberbullying in light of the death of Hannah Smith from Leicestershire. Messages found on her Ask.fm account show how trolls told her to “drink bleach”, “go get cancer” and “go die”.
Specialised surgery for children with epilepsy could end at Leeds General Infirmary, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. A consultation by Safe and Sustainable, which is leading two national reviews of specialist paediatric services for the NHS, has suggested that neurosurgery should be carried out at four dedicated centres. Doctors at Leeds have warned that children will be forced to travel to London, Birmingham, Manchester or Liverpool for the surgery.
