Troubled families tsar Louise Casey criticises "colluding" social workers, research backs pupil premium effectiveness, and LGA chief calls for changes to inspections for children's services, all in the news today.

Too many social workers are "colluding" with parents to make excuses for their children's behaviour, troubled families tsar Louise Casey has said. Casey told the BBC that social workers had to be more assertive and tell families the "honest truth" about their problems. They also had to be firmer with colleagues in other agencies and not worry about being "nice", she added.

Department for Education research shows that 80 per cent of secondary and two-thirds of primary schools introduced or enhanced support for disadvantaged pupils as a direct result of the pupil premium. Three quarters of schools also thought that using the premium to pay for additional staff was an effective way of supporting poorer pupils. Alongside the findings, schools minister David Laws announced a raft of measures to help narrow the attainment gap of disadvantaged pupils, including appointing John Dunford as the National Pupil Premium Champion.
