Daily roundup: Hospital care, nursery closure and teacher strikes

Most inappropriate hospital admissions involve children; nursery closed after toddler found in street; and planned teacher strike is called off, all in the news today.

Analysis by the College of Emergency Medicine has found that cases involving children and young people account for the majority of inappropriate admissions to hospital emergency departments (ED). Its report says around 15 per cent of all ED admissions could have been dealt with by a GP, with the largest group involving young children with minor illnesses. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health estimates a quarter of all ED admissions are for under-16s, of which 16 per cent could have been dealt with outside of hospital.

Ofsted has closed a nursery after a toddler in its care walked out unnoticed by staff and was found wandering the streets. The London Evening Standard reports that Oak Tree Nursery in East Dulwich has been shut to allow inspectors to investigate the incident.
