Daily roundup: child sexual exploitation, Jon Venables and children's centres

Online resource will raise awareness of child sexual exploitation, Bulger killer Venables to be released, and 23 children's centres in Kent at risk of closure, all in the new today.

The Local Government Association has produced an online resource to help raise awareness among staff and the public about the problem of child sexual exploitation. The resource, aimed at councils, charities and community organisations, offers advice on how to recognise the signs of child sexual exploitation and how it can be prevented.

Jon Venables, one of the child killers of two-year-old Jamie Bulger in 1993, is to be released from prison, the BBC reports. Venables, aged 10 at the time of the offence, had been previously paroled, but was sent back to jail for accessing child pornography.

Up to 23 children's centres across Kent could close under proposals to save £1.5m announced by Kent County Council. The authority wants to rebadge 16 of its 97 children's centres as lead centres, while a further 13 could operate part-time, reports Kent Online.
