Daily roundup: child sex abuse, Shared Lives schemes and youth employment

Numbers of reports about online child sex abuse images double in a year, research finds Shared Lives schemes are cheaper than other forms of care, and Princes Trust and M&S launch work placement initiative, all in the news today.

Authorities are receiving increasing numbers of reports of child sex abuse images on the internet. The BBC reports that the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre received reports relating to 70,000 indecent images in 2012 - twice as many as in 2011. The organisation said live images of child abuse being transmitted on the internet is an emerging issue.

Schemes that involve people who need support to live independently with their carer are far cheaper than other forms of care, research has found. A study by Social Finance and Community Catalysts found that Shared Lives schemes, which can be used for care leavers and young people with disabilities can save thousands of pounds. Savings were found to be £26,000 a year for people with learning disabilities and £8,000 a year for people with mental health needs.
