
Around 340 carers in the Merseyside area will have their allowances backdated after an investigation by the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) discovered Liverpool City Council had been underpaying them for years. The investigation was brought after a woman, who had been looking after her toddler nephew following a domestic violence incident, complained that the council was not paying her the correct benefits. Investigations into the woman's case by the LGO uncovered a wider problem in the Liverpool area.
A serious case review is due to be released shortly into the case of a four-year-old boy who was beaten and starved by his mother and her partner. The Guardian reports that Daniel Pelka died from a head injury in Coventry in March 2012. Mother Magdelena Luczak, 27, and her partner, Mariusz Krezolek, 34, were yesterday found guilty of murder following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court. Coventry's Safeguarding Children Board is due to publish a serious case review into Daniel's death in the next six weeks. The review will look at, among other things, why police and social services did not get involved after staff at Daniel's school noticed bruising on his neck and what appeared to be two black eyes.
