
The so-called 'bedroom tax' will breach young people’s human rights, the Children’s Commissioner for Scotland has stated. The Times reports that Tam Baillie said the changes to housing benefits would plunge young people into poverty and harm their social, emotional and mental wellbeing. “The bedroom tax is in breach of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The bedroom tax and other benefit changes will heap misery on families already struggling on the breadline,” said Baillie.
Hospitals have admitted children as young as seven for alcohol problems, according to the Daily Mail. Freedom of Information requests made by the newspaper to England’s 166 NHS hospital trusts revealed 380 children aged up to 10 received treatment for alcohol intoxication between 2008 and 2012.
