
A council's actions to address "serious weaknesses" in its multi-agency safeguarding hub have been recognised by Ofsted. In a report on a recent monitoring visit to "inadequate"-rated Surrey County Council, inspectors highlighted work to address challenges in setting up the hub, including boosting funding and carrying out a practice review. However, inspectors found work to address other weaknesses was taking too long to achieve change.
A school that received criticism over its handling of a transgender pupil who later committed suicide has complained to the Independent Press Standards Organisation over the reporting of the case. Wycombe High School has issued a complaint over what a statement refers to as "inaccurate, misleading and insensitive media reporting of the inquest into Leo's death". 15-year-old Leo Etherington took his own life last year, reports Pink News.
Members of a "cynical and well-practised" grooming gang have been jailed for up to 29 years for sexually abusing vulnerable girls in Newcastle upon Tyne. Victims, aged between 13 and 25, were given alcohol and the class B drug mephedrone before being sexually assaulted at "sessions" in the west end of the city, reports the Guardian. The case formed part of Operation Sanctuary, the biggest ever investigation into child and adult exploitation in the north east, which has identified 780 potential victims.
The teacher recruitment crisis has deepened to "worrying levels", latest figures have revealed, with schools facing an increasing struggle to fill vacancies. Using data from a quarter of the UK's schools, analysts for education recruitment service Eteach said there will be 13,969 teacher vacancies at the start of the school year - almost 24 per cent, up from 11,275 in September 2015, reports the Independent.
A 14-year-old boy who was shot in a double shooting in east London has died. The Metropolitan Police said Corey Junior Davis, from Forest Gate, died in hospital on Tuesday evening. Corey and a 17-year-old boy were found with gunshot wounds in Moore Walk, Forest Gate, on Monday afternoon, reports the BBC.
