National Audit Office blames government and councils for underperforming schools; call to give care leavers greater control over their future; and serious case review criticises Norfolk social workers, all in the news today.

New figures from the National Audit Office show that 1.5m children are being taught in schools judged to be less than “good” by Ofsted. The Telegraph reports that the watchdog claims that the children are missing out on a good education because the government and local councils are failing to deal with underperforming schools effectively.

A think-tank has called for care leavers to be given greater control over their future. The National Voice for Lifelong Learning issued the call after finding that 34 per cent of care leavers age 19 were not in education, employment or training at the end of 2013, compared with 18 per cent of all young people.
