Sue Harrison appointed DCS in Central Bedfordshire; survey reveals extent of school staff safeguarding concerns; and government adviser to become education commissioner in Birmingham, all in the news today.

Sue Harrison, the former director of children’s services (DCS) at Blackpool Council, has joined Central Bedfordshire Council. Harrison, who led Blackpool's children's services for two years, takes over as DCS at Central Bedfordshire from Edwina Grant, who had held the post since the council was formed in 2009.

More than two thirds of teachers, school leaders and support staff have reported a safeguarding concern in the past year. A survey by the NSPCC found that out of 1,211 education professionals surveyed, 804 reported a safeguarding issue. A total of 81 per cent of respondents said they had reported a concern within the past five years.
