Daily roundup 26 May: Zoo trip, role play, and antisocial behaviour

1 min read
School arranges zoo trip for less well-off children; parents angered over "role-play" exercise that saw children told they may not see parents again; and entire street branded antisocial for allowing their children to play in the street.

A primary school has come under fire after it announced plans to only take children from families on benefits on a trip to the zoo. The Daily Mail reports that the decision by All Saints Primary School in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, has angered some parents who feel their children have been left out.

A school has apologised for telling pupils they would be taken away and might not see their parents again, in what later emerged as role play. The BBC reports that children at Newington Church of England Primary School in Sittingbourne were aged between four and 11 and received the news in Friday assembly. The exercise, which was part of a week of learning about refugees, had not been discussed with parents or senior staff first, the school admitted.

An entire street has been branded antisocial and given a warning letter - for letting children play outside in the evening. The Sun reports that residents on North Weald Gardens, in Plymouth, Devon, have been told they could be evicted if they don't stop congregating in the road and have been ordered to supervise their noisy children.

A second referendum is needed before Britain leaves the EU in case the exit deal "wrecks the future for our children", Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Mark Williams has said. The BBC reports that the party launches its Welsh manifesto today and said the referendum was "at the heart" of its proposals.

Tracey Fletcher has been appointed interim chief executive of the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. The appointment follows the announcement that current chief executive Emma Atkins will be leaving in late June after nine years at the charity.
