
Footballer Wayne Rooney's testimonial match has raised £1.2m for children's charities. The Mirror reports that all proceeds from the match between his current club Manchester United and his former club Everton went to four charities that help disadvantaged youngsters - the NSPCC, Claire House Children's Hospice, Alder Hey Children's Charity and the Manchester United Foundation.
Senior judges are taking steps to end the presumption that a father must have contact with a child where there is evidence of domestic abuse that would put the child or mother at risk. The Guardian reports that the reforms are to be introduced in the family courts after campaigning by the charity Women's Aid, which identified that 19 children have been killed in the last 10 years by their violent fathers after being given contact with them by judges.
A Conservative MP has said she fears that the government's preoccupation with Brexit is holding up vital plans to make sex and relationships education compulsory in all schools. The Guardian reports that Maria Miller, chair of the women and equalities committee, which produced a damning report about sexual harassment and violence in schools, has launched a campaign to press the government to take swift action, calling an adjournment debate in the Commons today to try to build momentum.
Children's homes run by church and charities in Northern Ireland were the scene of widespread abuse and mistreatment of young residents, a report has found. The BBC reports that the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) studied allegations of abuse in 22 homes and other residential institutions between 1922 to 1995. The largest number of complaints related to four Catholic-run homes.
Youth groups in Sunderland have launched a protest petition amid fears that the city council may pull funding for projects that help thousands of youngsters. The Sunderland Echo reports that groups providing activities and support for young people could have their funding cut at the end of the financial year in March due to massive budget cuts at the local authority.
