
Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth and former Children's Secretary Ed Balls hosted a private screening of Kingsman: The Golden Circle to raise funds for charity Action for Stammering Children. The event raised around £40,000 to help support specialist speech and language therapy for children and young people who stammer.
A British clothing company's TV advert has been banned by the advertising watchdog for appearing to sexualise children. The Mirror reports that the Advertising Standards Authority said that the women used in the advert "appeared to be children" who were portrayed in a "sexualised manner". The advert featured two young models posing with props in a desert.
The number of teenagers who play outside, read books or get enough sleep has decreased dramatically in recent years, a study has found. The Lancashire Evening Post reports that a survey by children's charity Barnardo's found that 48 per cent of 13- to 15-year-olds play outside compared with 77 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds and 87 per cent of 45- to 54-year-olds when they were that age.
People are being asked to give their old pound coins to charity ahead of them going out of circulation. With less than four weeks until the round pound coin stops being accepted as legal tender, BBC Children in Need, The Royal Mint and HM Treasury have launched Pudsey's Round Pound Countdown, asking members of the public to donate their old coins to the annual charity appeal.
Local authority nurseries in Scotland offer higher quality care than those in the private sector. The BBC reports that statistics published by the Care Inspectorate found that at 94.3 per cent, council nurseries had the highest proportion of services rated good or better. Private nurseries lagged behind, with 82.3 per cent of their services in the top categories.
