
Ministers are being urged to fine schools that are informally excluding poorly performing pupils, amid mounting evidence that some institutions are attempting to game the exam system. The Observer reports that Anne Longfield, Children's Commissioner for England, said some schools were "abandoning their responsibility" to give a decent education to their children.
The government has been accused of ditching a bid to improve children's centres more than two years after pledging action. The Mirror reports that ministers promised a consultation into the cash-strapped services in 2015. Children's minister Robert Goodwill has said the government wants to "take some time" to gather evidence and consider what steps would be appropriate.
Youth homelessness will be wiped out in Wales within a decade under plans launched by the first minister. The BBC reports that Carwyn Jones has announced an extra £10m to help the 7,000 under-25s who seek help with homelessness every year. The Welsh Government will work with councils, housing associations, agencies and charities to help young people find stable accommodation.
The Diocese of Sheffield has been awarded £1.8m to support the transformation of children's, youth and families work. The Sheffield Star reports that the money will help Church of England parishes across the area to reach out and engage with more children, families and young people.
