
An average of 15 babies die every day in the UK from stillbirth, during labour or within four weeks of being born, a study has found. The Guardian reports that researchers found big variations in death rates across the country from 4.1 to 7.1 per 1,000 births.
A Conservative council at the centre of a cuts row involving the Prime Minister has announced plans to close more than half of its children’s centres. The BBC reports that 26 out of 44 children’s centres in Oxfordshire are set to close despite the plans previously being shelved. The council will consider the new proposals on 24 May.
The Carers Trust has launched a campaign calling on university admissions body UCAS to include a tick box on application forms so young adult carers have the opportunity to identify their caring role. The call follows research that found that 45 per cent of young adult carers said they do not have a particular person at college or university who recognised they were a carer and helped them.
Cases of teenage self-poisonings are on the rise in the UK, with those from poorer backgrounds the most at risk, researchers have found. The BBC reports that there was a 27 per cent increase in cases between 1992 and 2012, with teenagers in poorer areas up to three times more likely to poison themselves – either deliberately or accidentally.
The PSHE Association is looking for a new chief executive to take over from Joe Hayman. Hayman will leave in September after three-and-a-half years in the role.
A charity that aims to prevent children being taken into care unnecessarily is extending its support to Southampton. Southampton City Council will join Safe Families For Children UK, along with the 20 other local authorities it currently works with, to refer children from families in need of support to them before problems escalate.
