
Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will chair a committee looking into educational inequalities that has been launched by the Social Market Foundation. Clegg said that socio-economic factors are not the only cause of inequalities in educational attainment, but the cross-party committee will be also be examining the effects of gender, race and postcode inequalities.
The pace of improvement of Buckinghamshire County Council's children's services has been criticised by the government. The Bucks Herald reports that following an Ofsted report saying the department was putting children at risk after an inspection in August 2014, a further government monitoring visit in November last year raised concerns over the pace of improvement.
There are more children in Shropshire leaving care than there are children going into care, figures have revealed. The Shropshire Star reports that data from Shropshire Council shows there are 299 children in care – 14 less than in March last year - with a total of 75 children leaving this year (2015/16) and 64 joining.
Plans to convert a house into a children’s home in Doncaster have been approved by councillors despite objections. Doncaster Free Press reports the house on Church Road in Denaby Main will provide accommodation for up to four children despite 179 people signing a petition opposing the plans.
A total of 1,092 care applications were sent to the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service in December 2015, figures have revealed. It represents a 17 per cent increase on December 2014 when the service received 931 care applications.
