Government figures reveal financial struggles of academies; major crackdown on school absences in Southampton results in more than 1,200 fines; and youth charity appoints new chief executive, all in the news today.

More than half of academies in England have lacked enough income to cover their annual expenditure, according to figures revealed by the government. The BBC reports that an answer to a parliamentary question shows that the proportion of academy trusts with an annual shortfall doubled in two years.


More than 1,200 fines were issued to parents in Southampton for taking their children out of school in term time. The Southern Daily Echo reports that a total of 1,265 fixed-penalty notices were handed out in the city in 2014/15 as part of a national crackdown on school absences.


Youth charity the Foyer Federation has announced the appointment of Tokunbo Ajasa-Oluwa as the organisation's new chief executive. Ajasa-Oluwa replaces outgoing chief executive, Jane Slowey CBE, who left at the end of January after 12 years.


All candidates for Worcestershire County Council's 2017 elections will be asked to undertake awareness training in child abuse. The Worcester News reports that the step is part of the council's response to its children's services department being rated "inadequate" by Ofsted.


Bristol Freemasons have given £38,000 to help disadvantaged young urban farmers. The Masonic Charitable Foundation gave the money to the Urban Farmers Project which works with disadvantaged young people from local schools.
