Ofsted highlights north-south divide in education standards; details of pupils at risk of radicalisation released; and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver publishes child obesity crisis strategy, all in the news today.

Ofsted's chief inspector has warned of a "deeply troubling" divide between secondary schools in the Midlands and the north of England compared with the south. The Guardian reports that the difference cannot be explained by relative levels of poverty because there is no north-south divide for primary schools.


A council is investigating how the names of seven primary school pupils thought to be in danger of radicalisation became public. The Independent reports that a school in Waltham Forest released details of correspondence it had with the council in relation to a social cohesion programme it was running following a freedom of information request.


Children should be weighed at school each year, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has said. The Mirror reports that Oliver made the call in his new "crisis strategy" designed to protect the health of children, which says a new UK-wide programme that measures height and weight should be rolled out.?


A 19-year-old anti-gang youth worker from Birmingham has pleaded guilty to two offences of robbery. The Express & Star reports Eugene Mashidiku of Church Road, Smethwick, was sentenced to 12 months detention suspended for two years after taking part in the robbery of two schoolboys. He also has to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.?


Families in the UK are concerned their children may soon have nowhere to play, a survey by the Association of Play Industries has found. The findings show more than half (56 per cent) of parents are unhappy about the lack of high-quality facilities in their area, while nearly a quarter (23 per cent) think their nearest playground is in a poor state.?
