Custody: Figures on learning difficulties revealed

A significant number of people in prison, including children and young people, have learning disabilities claims new research.

A survey carried out by the University of Liverpool at three prisonsfound that 6.7 per cent of prisoners had learning disabilities. Afurther 25.4 per cent had borderline difficulties. In total this wouldaccount for more than 20,000 child and adult prisoners in a prisonpopulation of 80,000.

Jenny Talbot, programme manager at the Prison Reform Trust, said: "Thosewith learning difficulties are likely to struggle within the prisonregime and need some additional support. And understanding why they arethere is also of great concern." - www.prisonreformtrust.org.uk.
