During 2007/2008 she had suffered a number of distressing events such as witnessing the death of her sister's baby, being raped, discovering that her father was not her biological father and suffering an assault. These events led to tensions with her mother and an attempted suicide requiring her admission into a mental health unit. She later stayed with a supportive teacher and then in foster care. She claimed that she was unable to return home because she had received threats from the person who had raped her. The local authority claimed that she was not too scared to go home and in fact had other reasons for not wanting to live with her mother.
