Councils to deliver care overhaul

Social Care
Local authorities must now be ready to take forward improvements in outcomes for children in care, according to the Care Matters implementation plan.

Care Matters: Time to Deliver, published today (26 March), says the next stage in the delivery of the government's proposals to improve the lives of children in care will see a shift from developing policy at a national level to delivering change locally.

The document will contain resources to help people working in children's services take control of any necessary changes. It also sets out practical steps local authorities can follow to put in place plans laid out in the Care Matters white paper. This includes considering placing children with friends and family first, making sure a child's education is not disrupted and giving children the option to stay in care after they reach 16.
