Councils plan to support 380,000 more troubled families by 2020

The government's ambitious plans to expand the Troubled Families programme means local authorities will need to think creatively about how they reach and support more families with entrenched social problems.

If the government's initial desire to turn around the lives of 120,000 of the most troubled families by April 2015 was not ambitious enough, it has now unveiled plans to extend the intensive support to 500,000 by the end of the decade.

Prime Minister David Cameron wants the extension to take effect immediately and, to this end, the 51 authorities that have achieved the best results through the existing Troubled Families programme are due to start work with up to 40,000 additional families straight away.

Other authorities are set to follow next year and altogether councils now have the task of turning around an extra 380,000 families between 2015 and 2020.
