Councils at risk of missing targeted support deadline

Less than one in three councils have arrangements in place for targeted youth support services, despite the December deadline for them to do so.

Michael Bracey, principal youth officer for Southend-on-Sea, who is onsecondment to the government's Youth Taskforce, said only 42 ofEngland's 150 local councils had arrangements in place by September.

He said the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is towrite to directors of children's services to remind them, but admittednot every council will "have their plans fully in place" by 2009.

CYP Now understands the delays are partly because some councils have haddifficulty getting different agencies, such as schools and Connexionsservices, to play their part.

A DCSF spokesman declined to say whether action would be taken againstcouncils that miss the deadline, but said: "Already more than one infour have arrangements in place and we are confident this figure willgreatly increase by December."
