
The announcements earlier this month of hundreds of millions of pounds of Whitehall funding cuts look set to be the start of a new period of contraction affecting government departments working with children and families (see box).
The period of austerity in public sector spending between 2010 and 2015 saw significant reductions in local government budgets, with non-ringfenced services - such as early intervention, children's centres and youth work - feeling the brunt of funding cuts.
Latest analysis from the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) also shows that the impact of reduced council and government spending has been felt by charities working with children, young people and families.
