COUNCIL DEPARTURE: Camden in shock as director leaves

Social workers at the London Borough of Camden are said to be "reeling and bewildered" after the unexpected departure of the social services director, leading children's care expert Jane Held. The council announced on Christmas Eve that she was leaving her job. No reason has been given by the council leader Jane Roberts, who was made a Dame in the New Year's honours list.

The announcement provoked an angry email to colleagues in the ruling Labour group from Councillor Penny Abraham, whose portfolio includes social services. She said she felt "revulsion" at the decision, which left staff "reeling and bewildered".

Some councillors believe Held's departure came because the recent performance assessment by the Audit Commission dropped Camden's rating for adult care services from three to two out of four.
